UK Government Allocates £1.4 Million to Cutting-Edge Transport Projects to Spur Innovation and Growth

The UK government has announced a £1.4 million investment in 32 pioneering transport projects aimed at transforming the sector, boosting economic growth, and fostering innovation.

 

Organisations and academics with groundbreaking ideas were awarded up to £45,000 each to develop sustainable and forward-thinking solutions that contribute to the government's goal of creating cleaner, greener, and more efficient transport networks.

 

Over the past decade, the Transport Research and Innovation Grant (TRIG) programme has invested more than £15 million to support industries pursuing new technologies and collaborations, thereby delivering significant economic growth across the country.

 

This year's focus was on proposals targeting local transport decarbonisation, maritime decarbonisation, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and drones.

 

Aviation, Maritime and Security Minister Mike Kane stated:

 

"Innovation is the driving force behind our transport system, and these winning projects are leading the charge by creating cutting-edge solutions that could offer immense benefits for all. With sustainability at the core of this year's competition, we're helping to shape the future of transport—making travel cleaner, safer, and more efficient for everyone."

 

Among the innovative projects funded is Vox Aeris, which is developing a technology that uses sound waves and music vibrations to reduce harmful pollution across transport networks.

"We are beyond excited to be a TRIG 2024 winner. This support will be pivotal for developing our technology, assessing feasibility with refined prototypes, and engaging early stakeholders. We look forward to collaborating with Connected Places Catapult and the Department for Transport."

 

Previous TRIG winners include OpenSpace, a project that utilized digital twin technology and AI to address rail station disruptions, improving passenger flow management and enhancing safety and customer experience.

 

TRIG has been operational for over ten years, funding more than 430 projects ranging from shuttle bus apps connecting rural communities to trials using hydrogen to make air and sea travel greener.
