Logistics Tip of the Week: How to Transport Sensitive Electronics Safely

Servers, network equipment, control systems and other sensitive electronics can be extremely expensive - and their transportation requires more than simply placing the equipment on a pallet.

During transport, electronics are exposed to vibration, shocks, temperature changes, humidity and electrostatic discharge. IEC 60721-3-2 specifically classifies the environmental conditions that equipment may face during transportation and handling by road, rail, sea and air.

What should you pay attention to?

1. Use anti-static packaging

Static electricity can damage electronic components even when there is no visible physical damage. UPS recommends anti-static foam and suitable protective materials for electronic equipment, noting that conventional EPS packaging can generate static electricity.

2. Protect against vibration and shock

A server may look solid, but its internal components, connectors and storage devices can be sensitive to mechanical stress. For example, Dell specifies different vibration limits for operating and stored equipment. One PowerEdge R840 specification allows 0.26 G RMS during operation and 1.88 G RMS during storage.

That is why proper cushioning and rigid fixation inside the packaging matter.

3. Prevent movement inside the crate

Empty space is a risk. If the equipment can move inside the packaging, every acceleration, braking manoeuvre or road imperfection can turn into an additional impact.

Use correctly fitted inserts, cushioning and fixation points designed for the specific equipment.

4. Control temperature and humidity

Electronics can suffer from condensation when moved between significantly different environments. The equipment should be protected from moisture and sudden environmental changes, particularly during international transportation and warehouse transfers.

5. Plan the loading process

Sensitive electronics should be handled carefully from the moment they leave the warehouse. The route, vehicle, loading equipment, fixation and unloading procedure should be considered before transportation begins.
