Poland refuses to lift the grain embargo on Ukraine until the end of the year
Polish Agriculture Minister Stefan Krajewski confirmed that the grain import embargo on Ukraine will remain in place until at least the end of 2025.
“Support for Ukraine – yes, but not at the expense of Polish farmers and entrepreneurs,” he stated.
This stance contradicts the new EU–Ukraine trade agreement adopted on October 13, which grants Ukraine duty-free access to the EU market.
Diverging views between Warsaw and Brussels
Warsaw argues that full trade liberalization could harm domestic producers. Even if restrictions are temporarily lifted, Polish authorities insist on strict inspections and market monitoring. Meanwhile, the European Commission’s spokesperson Ulof Gill noted there are no legal grounds to extend national bans once the new trade regime takes effect.
However, Brussels retains the right to apply protective mechanisms in case of market disruptions, which could still restrict imports of wheat, sugar, poultry, and other sensitive goods.
