Ocean Freight Rates Surge Amid U.S. Tariff Turmoil: Global Logistics Under Pressure

In April 2025, the global logistics landscape faces renewed instability. Following the Trump administration's announcement of new tariffs, including a 145% levy on Chinese goods, ocean freight rates from Asia to North America have risen. Specifically, rates to the U.S. West Coast increased by 10% to $2,465 per forty-foot container, while rates to the East Coast rose by 3% to $3,647.

This surge is driven by importers' efforts to expedite shipments before the tariffs take effect. However, this strategy leads to port congestion and an increase in blank sailings, which, in turn, sustains high freight rates.

Global logistics is also under pressure due to shifting trade routes. Companies, including Amazon and Walmart sellers, have started storing goods in Canada to avoid high U.S. tariffs. This adds strain to Canadian warehouses and logistics centers.

The International Monetary Fund has lowered its global growth forecast due to the impact of new tariffs: global growth is now projected at 2.8% for 2025, down from previous estimates. This indicates that U.S. tariff policies have far-reaching consequences for the global economy.

In this context, companies engaged in international logistics must adapt to the new conditions. Utilizing bonded warehouses, relocating production to other countries, and optimizing supply chains become key strategies to reduce costs and ensure business stability.
