Grain Terminal in Chornomorsk Ready to Resume Operations After Reconstruction
Ukraine’s port infrastructure continues to recover despite ongoing security challenges. The agribusiness company Kernel has completed the reconstruction of its grain terminal “Transbalkterminal” in the Port of Chornomorsk. The facility suffered heavy damage during a missile strike in 2023 but is now preparing to resume full operations.
According to the company, reconstruction work has been completed and the terminal will soon restart operations with the same capacity it had before the attack. Once fully operational, the facility will be able to handle up to 10 million tonnes of grain per year, making it one of the largest export hubs for Ukrainian agricultural products.
Despite the damage to infrastructure, Kernel continued exporting grain through alternative logistics routes. Over the past six months, the company exported 2.7 million tonnes of grain, which is about 4% less than during the same period of the previous year.
Analysts expect export volumes to increase once the terminal resumes operations. Kernel forecasts that its share of Ukraine’s total grain exports could reach around 15% in the first half of the year, compared with roughly 11% in the first quarter of 2025.
At the same time, the stability of logistics infrastructure remains a crucial factor. Black Sea ports continue to play a critical role in global grain supply chains, connecting Ukrainian agricultural producers with markets around the world.
Beyond logistics recovery, Kernel is also preparing major investments in energy infrastructure. The company plans to invest around $400 million in wind and solar power generation as well as energy storage systems (ESS), with a total planned capacity of about 600 MW. Financing is expected to involve international institutions including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
For global markets, the reopening of a major grain terminal signals increased export capacity and improving logistics resilience in Ukraine.
