German Locomotives for Ukraine: A New Boost for Rail Logistics Resilience
Ukraine’s railway system is receiving new support from German partners as companies in Germany prepare to help modernize Ukrzaliznytsia’s locomotive fleet. The cooperation mainly focuses on used locomotives with significant remaining service life, while discussions are also ongoing regarding the sale and potential joint production of new locomotives.
A key part of this support involves TE109 diesel locomotives. Notably, these locomotives were originally produced at Ukraine’s Luhanskteplovoz plant, which makes them compatible with Ukraine’s rail infrastructure and easier to integrate into daily operations.
The first locomotives have already arrived in Ukraine as part of the cooperation package. They were delivered together with generators and construction equipment, strengthening Ukrzaliznytsia’s ability to repair damaged infrastructure and keep transport moving under wartime pressure. Earlier, the EU and Germany also provided more than 50 units of equipment, including vehicles, generators, dump trucks and excavators.
According to the RDNA5 assessment, direct damage to Ukraine’s transport sector has reached USD 40.3 billion, while reconstruction needs for the next decade are estimated at USD 96.3 billion. For businesses, this underlines a clear reality: resilient logistics requires long-term infrastructure support, reliable partners and flexible routing.
