Ukraine has received the first batch of rails from French partners — 19,000 tons worth €37.6 million. This delivery became possible thanks to an intergovernmental agreement between the two countries, with the full order expected to arrive by autumn 2025.
The new rails will be used to rebuild critical railway routes, including high-speed connections between Lviv and Uzhhorod, Kyiv and Lviv, Lviv and the EU border, as well as the Kyiv-Odesa, Kyiv-Dnipro, and Kyiv-Kharkiv routes. Additionally, they will help repair tracks damaged during hostilities.
After losing a major railway rail producer in Mariupol, specifically at the Azovstal plant, international cooperation has been vital in overcoming the shortage of this critical resource.
To finance this batch, Ukrzaliznytsia secured a 35-year loan at a symbolic interest rate of 0.0161% per year. According to the financial agreement, no repayments are required for the first 14 years.
