The Port of Duisburg, one of Europe’s largest inland logistics hubs, has unveiled a brand-new digital truck parking facility. Covering around 21,000 square meters, the site offers more than 90 parking spaces equipped with modern driver amenities, including rest areas and sanitary facilities. The project was developed on the former Triton shipyard and marks a key milestone in the port’s digital transformation.
The initiative was launched under the Segate project (“Sensor technologies and communication systems for monitoring parking spaces, access, and traffic flows at the terminal”), funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital Technologies and Transport. The facility is operated by Wirtschaftsbetriebe Duisburg, with the land leased by the city of Duisburg.
Thanks to Segate’s smart infrastructure, the parking system will allow real-time monitoring, automatic space allocation, and intelligent traffic management, improving the overall efficiency of port operations.
The official opening ceremony will take place on 26 August 2025, with high-ranking guests expected - including Viktor Haase, State Secretary of North Rhine-Westphalia’s Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport, and Duisburg’s mayor, Sören Link.
During the event, visitors will be introduced to Segate’s digital applications and smart parking solutions, which will be tested in a port environment for the first time.
Meanwhile, across the border in Poland, two new rest areas are being developed along the A4 motorway between Katowice and Kraków, with investments worth PLN 60.4 million (€14 million) set to begin in August.
These initiatives highlight a broader European trend: digitalisation and enhanced driver services are becoming central to modern logistics. For businesses, that translates into reduced waiting times, smoother port operations, and greater delivery reliability.
