Breaking Barriers in Rail Logistics: Ukraine and Spain Launch Gauge-Changing Innovation
Ukraine and Spain have taken a significant step toward transforming international rail logistics by agreeing to jointly develop an automatic railway gauge-changing system - a solution aimed at eliminating one of Europe’s most persistent infrastructure challenges.
Different railway gauges have long created inefficiencies in cross-border transportation. Ukraine operates on a 1520 mm track gauge, while most of Europe uses 1435 mm. Spain adds another layer of complexity with its 1668 mm network. These differences force cargo operators to rely on time-consuming processes at borders.
Currently, shipments must either be reloaded onto different wagons or undergo bogie exchange. Both options increase transit time, operational costs, and the risk of cargo damage. In fast-moving supply chains, even a few hours of delay can disrupt entire delivery schedules.

The tri-gauge solution could enable direct rail transport between Ukraine and Spain without cargo reloading - a major breakthrough for long-distance freight logistics.
The project will be implemented by Ukrzaliznytsia in partnership with Spanish companies TRIA and Adif. Spain has already allocated a €5.48 million grant, while the total investment is estimated at around €200 million.
