818 Metres and 5,100 Tonnes: Record Freight Train Crosses the Ukraine–Poland Border
On 15 August, a freight train of record size for the Dorohusk–Yahodyn route crossed the Ukraine–Poland border: 64 tank wagons, a total length of 818 metres and a gross weight of 5,100 tonnes.
The operation was organised by UZ Cargo Poland together with LTG Cargo Polska, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe and Ukrzaliznytsia. The train used the European-standard 1,435 mm gauge connection, while two M62M locomotives provided traction.
The significance of the run goes beyond the record itself. Longer freight trains can move more cargo within a single train path, helping border infrastructure handle higher volumes more efficiently. At the same time, operations of this scale help identify the real bottlenecks limiting cross-border rail capacity - station track length, locomotive availability, dispatching coordination and border procedures.
The use of 1,435 mm gauge is also important. It allows the train to continue toward Poland without changing the train’s gauge, reducing the number of additional operations required at the border and improving the potential efficiency of rail flows between Ukraine and the EU.
For businesses, the development of such routes means more flexibility when planning supply chains between Ukraine and European markets. Rail remains especially competitive for heavy, bulk and regular cargo flows, where predictable schedules and available border capacity can directly affect transport costs.
