⚠️ Logistics Tip of the Week: An Empty Tank Can Be More Dangerous Than a Full One

Most people assume that a full tanker carrying fuel or chemicals is the most dangerous scenario.

In reality, an empty tank can sometimes be even more hazardous.

After unloading, tanks often contain:

- flammable vapours;
- chemical residues;
- potentially explosive gas mixtures.

Even a small amount of residue can create a dangerous concentration of vapour inside the tank.

When a tank is full, there is less air inside.

When it is empty, vapours mix with oxygen, and in some cases this creates the ideal conditions for ignition or explosion.

That is why many "empty" tanks continue to be treated as ADR cargo.

🚛 Interesting fact

Under ADR and international transport regulations, an uncleaned empty tank is often classified in the same way as a loaded one.

Until cleaning, degassing, and safety verification have been completed, the tank may still require ADR markings and special handling.

So when you see an "empty" tanker displaying hazard placards, it may not be as empty-or as safe-as it appears.
