Poland is moving forward with the development of a major transport corridor towards the Ukrainian border. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego and the Ministry of Infrastructure have signed an agreement enabling the use of €1.1 billion in European Investment Bank financing for almost 205 km of the S17 and S74 expressways.
Of this amount, €500 million will support the extension of the S17 between Piaski and Hrebenne in the Lublin Voivodeship. The four planned sections have a combined length of 93.2 km.
The financing is a European Investment Bank loan rather than a non-repayable EU grant. The project also includes Polish national funding and support from European programmes.
Once completed, the S17 is expected to create a continuous high-speed route linking Warsaw, Lublin, Zamość and the Polish-Ukrainian border. The corridor forms part of the international E372 route connecting Warsaw with Lviv.
For Ukrainian and European businesses, the investment could make freight transport through Poland faster and more predictable. The new road infrastructure should reduce time lost in towns, limit the impact of local congestion and improve road safety.
The route is particularly important for supply chains connecting Ukraine with Poland, Germany, the Benelux countries and the United Kingdom. However, the expressway alone will not remove border queues. Delivery times will still depend on the capacity of the Hrebenne–Rava-Ruska crossing, customs procedures and inspections for certain categories of goods.
