EU and US Approve Tariff Deal: What It Means for Trade and Logistics

The European Union has approved the key steps needed to implement its tariff agreement with the United States. The decision is aimed at reducing the risk of another trade conflict between two of the world’s largest economic partners.

For companies, this is more than a political development. Tariffs affect landed cost, customs clearance, delivery timing and contract planning. When trade rules change, businesses need to review routes, documents, commodity codes and the full cost of each shipment.

Under the approved package, the EU will remove tariffs on US industrial goods. The United States will also receive preferential access for selected agricultural products and seafood. Duty-free treatment for American lobster imports will be extended as well, including processed lobster products.

In return, the United States is expected to cap tariffs on most EU imports at 15%. For European exporters, this may not be perfect, but it creates more predictability. Companies can plan export prices, delivery schedules and long-term contracts with clearer tariff conditions.

Transatlantic trade remains one of the most important trade routes in the global economy. In 2025, trade in goods and services between the EU and the US exceeded €1.77 trillion. This includes industrial machinery, automotive parts, chemicals, food products, pharmaceuticals, electronics and production components.

The agreement also includes safeguard mechanisms. The EU keeps the right to adjust or suspend certain tariff preferences if trade conditions change. The current framework is expected to apply until 31 December 2029, unless extended.

For importers and exporters, the main takeaway is clear: trade rules should be checked before cargo is shipped, not after it reaches the border. Customs duties, documentation, cargo codes and route options all need to be reviewed in advance.
