Ukraine is entering a major phase of railway infrastructure renewal. In 2026, Ukrzaliznytsia plans to repair more than 1,000 kilometres of railway track across the country. The repair works have already started with the arrival of warmer spring weather.
The programme will cover all regions of Ukraine, including frontline areas. Priority is being given to key logistics and transit corridors that support domestic freight flows and export transportation.
Before the active repair season began, Ukrzaliznytsia accumulated rails and sleepers sufficient to renew around 150 kilometres of track. Repair teams also have about 120 switch units available for installation - essential components for safe and efficient railway operations.
Additional materials will continue arriving throughout the year. Many of these components are now sourced internationally from suppliers in Austria, Poland, France, Japan, the Czech Republic and China.
This reliance on foreign supply is linked to the destruction of Azovstal, previously the only Ukrainian producer of railway rails. Since the loss of this facility, the railway sector has increasingly depended on international partners to maintain infrastructure recovery.
For the logistics sector, these repairs are highly important. Track quality directly affects transport speed, schedule reliability and the predictability of freight delivery.
