Ukraine deploys first rail cargo scanners: a boost for cross-border speed and security
Ukraine is taking a decisive step toward modernising rail border controls. The first scanning systems for inspecting rail wagons and containers have already been delivered to the country under an order from the State Customs Service. These non-intrusive inspection technologies are designed to check cargo without opening it, without stopping trains, and without disrupting logistics flows.
At the same time, construction and engineering works are underway to prepare the sites for installation, with all safety requirements fully observed. The scanners are expected to become operational in the second half of 2026.
The first systems of this type in Ukraine will be installed at the Yahodyn and Mostyska-2 railway stations - two key rail gateways connecting Ukraine with Poland and the wider EU market. These corridors handle a substantial share of rail-based trade, making efficiency at these points critical for exporters, importers, and logistics operators.
The scanners will operate 24/7 and provide fully automated, bidirectional scanning. In practical terms, this allows cargo to be inspected in both directions without halting traffic. For businesses, it means fewer delays at the border, more predictable transit times, and reduced operational risk.
