UK Trials World’s First AI-Driven Road Camera to Detect Impaired Drivers

The UK has begun testing an innovative AI road camera designed to detect drivers under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. The tests are being conducted in Devon and Cornwall.

Once any sign of impairment is detected, the information is immediately relayed to on-duty patrol units. The police can then stop the vehicle, interview the driver, and conduct sobriety tests if necessary. Enforcement measures only follow established legal protocols, ensuring a fair and accurate process.

Jeff Collins, General Manager of Acusensus UK, emphasized that these world-first trials aim to enhance road safety. The camera can be swiftly relocated to any road without warning, making it harder for impaired drivers to avoid detection.

Previous Acusensus technologies have been deployed to help law enforcement catch drivers using mobile phones or not wearing seat belts. The developers highlight that impaired drivers cause six times more fatal accidents than other offenders, illustrating how this cutting-edge technology could literally save lives.
