Rail freight from China to Europe – is it worth considering in 2025?

Rail freight between China and Europe remains a popular option - especially for those looking for a balance between speed and cost.

✅ 2-5 times cheaper than air freight
✅ 2-3 times faster than sea shipping
✅ Regular departures
✅ Works for both FCL (full container) and LCL (consolidated cargo)

Practical tips from logistics experts:

  1. Always check your product’s HS code to make sure it doesn’t fall under any export restrictions when transiting through Russia or Belarus. This is especially important for Ukrainian companies.

  2. Key rail terminals in China include Chengdu, Xi’an, Yiwu, Zhengzhou, and Chongqing - your cargo must be delivered there before departure.

  3. Containers should be delivered to the terminal 7-14 days before departure, depending on the schedule and cargo type.

  4. Transit time is usually 12-21 days to Poland (Małaszewicze, Łódź, Warsaw) and from there to other European countries.

  5. Alternative route: via Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkey - takes longer, but avoids transit through Russia and Belarus.

  6. Border procedures: changing railway gauge at borders may slightly increase delivery time.

⚠️ When rail freight might not be the best option:
• If your cargo is time-sensitive (go for air instead)
• If your goods are regulated, restricted or dual-use
• If transparency and ethics of the supply chain are essential
• If transit through sanctioned countries is a reputational or legal risk

🟡 A note on ethics and responsibility:

As a company with Ukrainian roots, at LOADSTAR we take special care when planning international logistics routes.

For us, it’s not just about delivery time or cost - we also evaluate legal, ethical, and reputational risks.

Rail routes through Russia or Belarus may still be active, but they must be assessed case by case. In many situations, they’re not compatible with the values of businesses that care about transparency and long-term trust.

Our advice: don’t just look at the rate - ask what route your cargo will take.

✅ We do offer rail freight - but only when it makes real sense:

At LOADSTAR, we offer rail freight from China to Europe as one of the available options - alongside sea and air delivery. It’s not for every case, but in the right situation, it can be the most efficient and cost-effective solution.

We always explain the pros and cons so our clients can make informed decisions - based on facts, not just price.

If you’re considering rail freight and want honest advice - feel free to get in touch. We’ll help you assess whether it’s the right fit for your cargo and business goals.
