Logistics Fact of the Week: How Truck Platooning Drives Sustainability in Road Transport

In several countries, trucks operate in “platoons” - tightly spaced convoys on highways.
This reduces fuel consumption and cuts CO₂ emissions.

Truck platooning uses vehicle-to-vehicle communication and adaptive cruise control to synchronize speed and braking. Reduced air resistance leads directly to lower fuel use.

According to verified pilot projects:

-Lead truck: up to 4–5% fuel savings
-Following trucks: up to 8–10%
-CO₂ emissions: reduced proportionally

Platooning is already being tested and deployed in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, the USA, and Japan, mainly on long-haul routes with stable traffic.

This is a clear example of how logistics can improve efficiency and sustainability without waiting for fully autonomous fleets.
