Hormuz Under Pressure: Iran Tries to Turn a Strategic Sea Route into a Pay-to-Pass Corridor

Iran is tightening its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. According to Bloomberg, some vessels have reportedly been asked to pay up to $2 million per voyage, creating what looks like an informal transit toll. At the same time, Tehran says passage remains open only to “non-hostile” ships that coordinate with Iranian authorities.

This is no longer just a geopolitical headline - it is a major logistics problem. The Strait of Hormuz is essential for the movement of oil, gas, industrial cargo and strategic commodities. As the regional conflict has intensified, vessel traffic has fallen sharply, while many ships have been delayed, stranded or forced to wait for clearance. Reuters reported that India has started moving some cargoes out of the Gulf, but a significant number of vessels are still exposed to operational risk.

For shippers and cargo owners, the implications are immediate: higher freight uncertainty, elevated insurance costs, longer transit planning cycles and more pressure on supply chains. AP has reported that Iran is effectively formalising a selective-access regime, requiring detailed ship information and, in some cases, payments through intermediaries. Maritime experts argue that such practices clash with international norms on free passage through global straits.

There is, however, an important nuance. Iran’s embassy in India has denied that any official $2 million charge exists, calling the reports false. Even so, the broader market signal remains clear: when access to a chokepoint depends on political approval, logistics risk rises sharply - whether the fee is formally acknowledged or not.

For businesses moving cargo through volatile corridors, 2026 is proving one thing again: resilient logistics depends on route flexibility, insurance strategy, compliance awareness and fast operational decisions. LOADSTAR helps companies navigate exactly these conditions - with practical planning, risk visibility and tailored freight solutions.
