At the *Ukrainian Transport Forum 2025* held in Odesa, a strategic proposal captured the attention of industry leaders: building a European-standard (1435 mm) railway line to the Ukrainian port of Reni. Discussions also included extending this line to Izmail via Giurgiulești in Moldova.
🚂 A Track with History
This isn't the first time a European-gauge railway has touched Odesa region. Until the 1990s, a quad-track system ran between Galați (Romania) and Reni (Ukraine), allowing both Soviet (1520 mm) and European trains to operate on the same path. Unfortunately, the infrastructure was dismantled decades ago.
⚠️ Giurgiulești Link — Challenges Ahead
The 1435 mm line leading to Galați via Moldova still exists — but hasn’t been used for years. To make it functional again, serious diagnostic and repair work will be needed. Despite this, logistics experts believe the route can be revived, with transshipment terminals reactivated at each endpoint — boosting cargo flows across Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania.
🚛 Faster, More Modular Freight Movement
Extending a European-gauge line to Reni would bring multiple advantages for international logistics:
- Faster and more direct cargo movement between EU markets and Ukrainian ports
- Creation of a modular logistics system, with transshipment hubs at key nodes
- Lower transloading costs and risks, especially for sensitive cargo
- Greater flexibility for planning multimodal transport
🛤 Ukrzaliznytsia Supports the Vision
Valerii Tkachov, Deputy Director of Freight Operations at *Ukrzaliznytsia*, confirmed the company’s broader goal of expanding EU-standard railways — not only between Kyiv and Lviv but also toward Odesa. This would pave the way for integrating Ukrainian seaports into the broader European logistics network.
If you're looking to optimize cargo movement between the EU and Ukraine, our team will help you navigate multimodal transport with full support in documentation, permits, and customs clearance.
