European Gauge in Ukraine: Next Stop – Lviv

Ukraine is steadily advancing towards full integration with the European transport network. Following the inauguration of the newly built European-standard railway line between Chop and Uzhhorod, the government has announced the next milestone - extending the European gauge to Lviv.

The plan envisions a hybrid track from Sknyliv station to Mostyska-2, combining two types of gauge. In addition, the Uzhhorod line will be extended to Lviv, ensuring direct EU-standard rail connectivity between the largest city in Western Ukraine and key border crossings.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communities Development, Oleksii Kuleba, electrification of the Chop–Uzhhorod section will begin this autumn. The state budget has allocated UAH 128 million for the works, with additional funding from the EU’s CEF program.

The European Union has already committed €76 million in grants to support these projects. Once completed, a new transport ring will emerge - Lviv – Mostyska – Uzhhorod – Chop - providing seamless EU-gauge rail services to Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary.

Officials underline that this is only the beginning. The first phase of modernization foresees up to 10 main corridors where European-standard railway will connect Ukraine’s key industrial hubs with the EU network. Another project under discussion is extending the gauge to link Zakarpattia with Volyn.

Why does this matter for business?

Faster freight: no more complex transshipments at the border.
Unified standard: reduced logistics costs and simplified planning.
Direct EU access: expanded opportunities for Ukrainian exporters.
